Lafayette Square, an urban park in the center of Downtown, is home to lunchtime people watching and to Buffalo Place’s weekly Thursday at the Square concert series. The park features an expanse of open grass on the Main Street side and a tree shaded area on the Washington Street side. Ideal for public gatherings of any size with a dramatic view of City Hall, the center of the square is dominated by the Soldiers & Sailors Monument. Features of the monument include a nameless stone lady, "emblematic of Buffalo," atop the 85-foot column. Eight-foot statues representing members of the infantry, cavalry, artillery, and navy surround the shaft, which itself is decorated with bronze symbols of the nation and state, the seal of Buffalo and a "drum" showing over thirty figures. One of Downtown Buffalo’s great urban spaces, Lafayette Square is quiet oasis in the hub of the City.
