Outreach & Collaboration:
Security Committee: The Security Committee
meets on the second Tuesday of each month.
Attendees include Downtown security directors,
managers of businesses as well as Buffalo Police
Officers, NFTA Police Officers, Assistant District
Attorneys, private security and building managers.
They discuss security and safety issues as well as
solutions.
SecureNet Radio System: Buffalo Place has a
radio system through the Buffalo Fire Department
Communications Division that allows various building
security personnel to communicate any problems or
suspicious activity between the different sites
including
the NFTA Police Department Dispatch Center. There are currently radios at 25 locations in Downtown Buffalo. The SecureNet Radio System has been instrumental in the apprehension of individuals involved in criminal activity within the downtown area. The Buffalo Place Security Department broadcasts a 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. radio check and update every business day.
Community Police Patrols: The most critical element of enhancing the safety of Downtown is the presence of uniformed police officers. Proper staffing of personnel, hours and areas of coverage is one part of this process. Having officers walk, ride bicycles, motorcycles or ride in slower (i.e., more visible) vehicles such as golf carts, is the other.
Buffalo Police officers patrol the Central Business District weekdays at various times between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The officers also work with the Buffalo Place Security Manager regarding security issues that impact the downtown business community such as investigating leads that are brought to the attention of Buffalo Place by various businesses within the Central Business District. Numerous arrests have been made by utilizing this sort of community based policing.
You can also find the Transit Police very visible on the Pedestrian Mall. They have a diligent patrol between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the trains are extremely busy with students.
Safety Seminars for Employers: Employers are welcomed to borrow security tapes from the Buffalo Place video library. These tapes help employers show employees various tips regarding their personal safety at work as well as at home.
Extra Eyes and Ears: Buffalo Place gathers and distributes identifying information concerning criminal suspects to various security directors and officers within the Downtown area to discourage the presence of these individuals. Information and photos of known undesirables are obtained through the cooperation of local, county and state agencies and distributed to Downtown security personnel. The Security Department is a member of the Graffiti Hurts Task Force Committee, which identifies and compares graffiti activity in an effort to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Buffalo Place maintains a photo database of graffiti in the Buffalo Place District.
