This 11 member indie rock group of multi-talented musical artists was founded in Southern California in 2007. Front man Alex Ebert, former member of the group Ima Robot, orchestrates the outfit. Rejecting claims that Edward Sharpe is Alex Ebert’s alter ego, Ebert says the band name is simply a mix of a bunch of friend names from back home in Los Angeles. After a year and a half of work in the Laurel Canyon home studio of Ebert’s close friend and present band member Nico Aglietti, the group put out their first record, Up from Below in 2009.
While not bonding with fellow Edward Shape band mates, Ebert was in the studio throughout 2010 putting together his first solo album, Alexander. This debut album hit shelves March 2011 and is comprised of 10 tracks of which Alex did all of the musical and vocal work. According to the album review on prefix.com, “In terms of the sound he was going for, Ebert said he was inspired by bands such as Mungo Jerry along with kids' songs like "Patty Cake." In other words, you can expect something slightly experimental, but also something entirely catchy.”
According to LA Weekly’s review of the gig the group played in San Pedro in April 2011 with Mumford and Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show, “Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros make people happy. A gaggle of transcendent musicians featuring an angelic accordion player and a sage trumpeter (my favorites) as well as whiskey-throated ex-lovers and enough biographical mythology to make Joseph Beuys jealous, only the cynical or the high-falutin' could make it through a whole show without a smile.”
