About
G. Love & Special Sauce
G. Love & Special Sauce
- G. Love & Special Sauce is Garrett Dutton - a.k.a G. Love (vocals, guitar and harmonica), James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott (bass), Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens (drums and vocals) and Mark Boyce (keyboards).
- G. Love was born on October 3, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and began playing guitar at age 8. In ninth grade, he was playing harmonica on a wire rack and wrote his first song. At the same time, he was digging the then-contemporary “Old-School” hip-hop sound of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys and Philly’s own Schooly D, while also being influenced by Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr.
- In 1992, G. Love moved to Boston, where he met drummer Jeffrey Clemens and bassist Jim Prescott. From that meeting came the band known as G. Love & Special Sauce.
- The band was signed to Epic Records in 1994 and released their self-titled debut album. The album is now certified Gold.
- The trio began touring as both club headliners and support to bigger names, at times playing three sets in a single day. The band played on the main stage of the H.O.R.D.E. tour alongside Blues Traveler and The Black Crowes and to much fan acclaim, toured throughout Europe, Japan and Australia.
- In 1995, the group moved south to New Orleans, to record Coast to Coast Motel. They chose New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz and blues music, for their inspiration.
- With the amicable departure of drummer Jeffrey Clemens and bassist Jim Prescott, new members, Robert Phillips (bass), Chuck Treece (drums) and Mike Tyler (guitar) joined the band. The new lineup made its debut on May 9, 1996, supporting the Dave Matthews Band in Ottawa, Canada. The band also supported Rusted Root on several U.S. tour dates.
- In 1999, the original Special Sauce members released the album, Philadelphonic.
- The Hustle, released in 2004, was a collection of songs celebrating the bands musical foundation and progression of “The Hip Hop Blues” (a term coined by G. Love himself). The album is was also the third full-length album from Jack Johnson’s label, Brushfire Records.
- Special Sauce did a series of shows in 2004 with Jack Johnson and fellow Brushfire artist Donavon Frankenretier.
- In 2005, the band was featured in an advertisement for Coca-Cola Zero with their own version of Coca-Cola’s ad song, “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.”
- The latest effort from the band, Superhero Brother, was recorded in Philadelphia at the band’s own Philadelphonic Studios and Longview Farms Barn in Massachusetts. The albums combination of both political and party songs is the perfect reflection of the Special Sauce formula – post hip-hop, Beatles influenced blues-rock.
- Playing in front of a live audience continues to be an important component of the Special Sauce success. “Playing in front of people is just such an integral part of the experience for us. We love to ride that energy and get that instant reaction” says Dutton.
- G. Love has taken advantage of the vast new ways to connect with his fans – blogging and posting videos on YouTube constantly, which track him rehearsing new songs in various stages of development.
