About

Gov't Mule

Gov’t Mule
- Gov’t Mule is Warren Haynes (guitar), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboard), Jorgen Carlsson (bass).
- Gov’t Mule began as a side project for Allman Brothers Band members Warren Haynes and the late Allen Woody.
- In 1994, the two long time members of the Allmans met and jammed with drummer Matt Abts at a Los Angeles club following an Allman Brothers Band concert in the same city.
- The trio began to play together more seriously, but still attempted to keep it a side project while they were still playing and touring with the Allman Brothers Band.
- The group released their self-titled debut album in 1995 and a live album, Live at Roseland Ballroom in 1996.
- In 1997, Haynes and Woody resigned from the Allman Brothers Band to pursue Gov’t Mule full time.
- They signed with Capricorn Records in 1999 and released another live CD, Live With a Little Help From Our Friends.  The CD was a recording of their 1998 New Year’s Eve concert.  During the concert Gov’t Mule was joined on stage by members of the Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes and Parliament-Funkadelic.
- In 2000, the trio released another CD, Life Before Insanity.  Months after the release, bassist Allen Woody passed away.
- Haynes and Abts continued recording, producing the 2001 effort, The Deep End, Vol. 1, which features an impressive roster of bass players to replace Woody, including John Entwisle of The Who, Flea of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Bruce of Cream and Mike Gordon of Phish.  The album’s recording sessions were featured as part of the documentary film, On the Banks.
- Deciding it was time for the band to move on, Haynes and Abts chose a new band member, Danny Louis (keyboard) in 2002.  A year later, the strong trio turned into a stronger quartet with Andy Hess (previously from The Black Crowes) joining on the bass.
- Deja Voodoo, under the umbrella of ATO Records, was the first album Gov’t Mule released as a newly formed band.  Half the songs were written before the new band members joined, while other songs were written by the two newest members.
- In 2006, Gov’t Mule released High and Mighty.  The album is a fusion of blues, folk, reggae, soul and jazz.  High and Mighty was recorded the old fashioned way – four musicians, in one room together.
- The 2007 release, Mighty High, reached #106 on Billboard 200 chart.
- In 2009, the band released By A Thread, their first album in three years.  The album was recorded at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in the Texas Hill Country.
- Considered one of the hardest working bands in the industry, Gov’t Mule worked to make By A Thread, a record that would appeal to both old and new fans and developed the new material in the studio in order to prevent internet leaks.
- With popularity growing for more than a decade, Gov’t Mule is still performing live for their huge fan base.
