The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society was founded in 1862 and is one of the oldest regional historical societies in the country and the largest in Western New York. It preserves over 80,000 artifacts documenting the cultural heritage of the region. The museum is located in the only remaining permanent structure from the Pan-American Exposition and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The Research Library cares for over 20,000 books, 200,000 photographs and 2,000 manuscript collections. It is also a major repository of genealogical research.
