It preserves over 80,000 artifacts documenting the cultural heritage of the region. The museum is located in the only remaining permanent structure from the Pan-American Exposition and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The Research Library cares for over 20,000 books, 200,000 photographs and 2,000 manuscript collections. It is also a major repository of genealogical research.
