Ed Kowalczyk of LIVE
- Ed Kowalczyk is the lead singer and songwriter of the band Live.
- Kowalczyk joined Live during the early 1980’s when the band was beginning. They were then known as Public Affection.
- After gaining a large following and releasing a demo, the group landed a deal with Radioactive and changed their name to Live.
- Their 1991 debut, Mental Jewelry entered them into the alternative music scene that was taking place in the early ‘90’s.
- Live’s follow up album, Throwing Copper, launched the band into the rock mainstream. After a few successful singles they released Lighting Crashes. The song boosted the album to the top of the charts. Lighting Crashes spent 12 consecutive weeks on Billboards Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
- Other hits from Throwing Copper included White Discussion and All Over You. The album has sold eight million copies in the U.S. and reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 1995.
- Live took to the road and made appearances at the MTV 120 Minutes tour, Woodstock ’94 and Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD tour.
- Secret Samadhi continued on the momentum of Throwing Copper and debuted at number one on the charts. Although not matching the success of its predecessor, the album sold two million copies.
- The 1999 release of The Distance to Here debuted at number four and featured the single The Dolphin’s Cry. The single peaked at #2 on Mainstream Rock singles chart. Live co-headlined a tour with the Counting Crows.
- A week after the events of September 11, 2001 Live released V. The melancholy single “Overcome” received considerable airplay due to the state of the nation.
- Birds of Pray was released in May 2003 and contained the hit Heaven. The song reached #59 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #33 on both the Modern and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts.
- Shortly after the release of Songs from Black Mountain the group split ways. Kowalczyk pursued solo projects and collaborated with other musicians.
- Kowalczyk’s debut solo album, Alive was released in April 2010 and he embarked on an international tour to support the compilation.
