What time is it Buffalo?  It is time for the sweet, soulful, funky sounds of Morris Day and the Time.  The Time was created as an alter-ego to the iconic 1980’s funk/pop artist, Prince as an outlet for further musical expression after the success of his first hit, “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”  The group started as a spin-off of Flyte Time, of which ex-member Cynthia Johnson grew famous as the stellar female vocalist behind the 1980 hit “Funkytown.”  The formation was the outcome of a clause in Prince’s contract with Warner Brothers Records that enabled its creation. Prince used The Time as an outlet to write fun material about love, sex, style, attitude, partying and money and the band was featured on his 1984 record, Purple Rain which features hits, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain.

Morris Day and Prince played together in a band while in high school and Day continued his relationship with Prince as one of his creative associates once Prince made it to the big time.  When Prince was searching for a charismatic front man for The Time, Morris was the man who he envisioned playing the role.  Like his comrade Prince, Morris Day describes himself as a creative individual and a true fashionista.    He was discovered by Courtney Benson of Hollywood Records while playing at the party commemorating the 100th episode of South Park.  Morris Day and the Time made a cameo appearance in the 2001 film, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, performing their single, Jungle Love and also contributed the track, Somebody’s Watching Me on the Haunted Mansion soundtrack.  Morris Day is known as the “Master of Cool” and will be sure to get the crowd going at Lafayette Square.
