About
Rogue Wave
Rogue Wave
- Rogue Wave is comprised of Zach Rogue (vocals, guitar, wurlitzer), Pat Spurgeon (drums, keyboards, vocals), Dominic East (guitar, pedal steel, vocals), Cameron Jasper (bass) and Steve Taylor (keyboards, guitorgan).
- The band is known for their “in-ward looking” pop songs, highlighted with psychedelic guitars and intricate rhythms.
- The band was formed in 2002 by Rogue, after the newly-unemployed musician lost his tech job and parted ways with the Oakland rock group, Desoto Reds.
- Rogue quickly comprised an album of textured indie pop and put together a band including Spurgeon as well as bassist Sonya Westcott and guitarist Gram LeBron, to perform the material live. Out of the Shadow was released and the newly formed outfit began to play shows with Spoon and Mates of State.
- In 2004, Sub Pop signed the band and reissued Out of the Shadow.
- Westcott was eventually replaced in the lineup by Evan Farrell and the band began recording a second album. The first result of their efforts was the “10:1” single, released in August 2005.
- Descended Like Vultures was released in late 2005 and songs from the album appeared on television shows including Weeds, Friday Night Lights and Heroes.
- In 2006, drummer Pat Spurgeon underwent a kidney transplant and Farrell left the band. Patrick Abernathy, formerly with Beulah, joined the group in his place.
- Rogue Wave is featured extensively in the documentary, D-Tour, which chronicles Spurgeon's struggles with kidney disease and his wait for a transplant. The film was featured on the show “Independent Lens” on PBS.
- Jack Johnson signed Rogue Wave to his Brushfire Label and released their third album, Asleep at Heaven's Gate, in 2007.
- Cameron Jasper was then added to the band, playing bass and the new Rogue Wave returned in early 2010 with their second Brushfire recording, Permalight. The band worked with Dennis Herring, whose previous clients include Modest Mouse and Elvis Costello.
