About
Martin Sexton
Martin Sexton
- Martin Sexton is a native of Syracuse, New York.
- He began his career as a street musician in Boston’s Harvard Square and eventually made his way into the bars and clubs of Boston and Cambridge.
- His 1992 collection of self-produced demo recordings, In The Journey, and his live appearances, led to many Boston Music Awards. Sexton also won the National Academy of Songwriters Artist of the Year award.
- In 1996, Sexton released the album Black Sheep.
- After being signed to Atlantic Records, Sexton released the album The American in 1998.
- Inspired by artists such as Ani DiFranco, Sexton produced his second Atlantic album, Wonder Bar, all on his own. Bassist Tony Levin of King Crimson and Peter Gabriel’s band along with keyboardist David Sancious of Bruce Springsteen and Sting’s bands, were featured on the album.
- After releasing Wonder Bar, Sexton was hailed by Billboard’s Timothy White as “the finest new male singer/songwriter of recent memory,” as well as “a vocalist of amazing proficiency and sensual conviction.”
- In 2002, Sexton launched is own label, Kitchen Table Records, with his first official live release, a double-CD set, Live Wide Open. Mixed by John Alagia, known for working with Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer, the sound of the record portrays the power of Sexton’s connection with the crowd.
- Acoustic Guitar Magazine was enthusiastic about Sexton’s remarkable visceral live shows, calling the singer a “master of dynamics, reducing a room to silence with his blustering baritone, then teasing that silence with a fluttering falsetto.”
- Sexton released his seventh collection of songs, Seeds, in 2007. Seeds is a blend of gospel, country, blues and rock. The album debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and the Los Angeles Times wrote “Call him a soul shouter, a road poet, a folkie or a rocker and you wouldn’t be wrong.”
- In October 2008, Sexton released Solo, which is a CD/DVD set. Solo is documentation of live appearances set in theatres across the coast.
- Sexton released Sugarcoating in April 2010. The album stays true to his soulful acoustic style yet is creative and fresh.
- While remaining independent, Sexton’s fan base has grown over the years as they feel they have a personal connection to his music.
