The Fabulous Thunderbirds
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
- The Fabulous Thunderbirds lineup is comprised of Kim Wilson (vocals), Johnny Moeller (guitar), Mike Keller (guitar), Jay Moeller (drums) and Randy Bermudes (bass).
- For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds has churned out a distinctive and powerful sound. Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member still spearheads the group, famous for their hits “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up.”
- For Wilson, the musical journey began in California at 17 when he started playing the harmonica. He was influenced by the sound of Little Walter, George “Harmonica” Smith, Lazy Lester and James Cotton.
- In search of other fellow musicians, Wilson then moved to Minneapolis and eventually to the burgeoning music scene of Austin, Texas, where he met Jimmy Vaughan, the brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan and Wilson founded The Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1974.
- The band played the live circuit in Austin and gained a following with their contagiously exciting live performances. Their cool reputation led way to a record deal with Epic Records.
- In 1979, The Fabulous Thunderbirds released their first self-titled album. Primarily blues influenced, the album quickly became a cult classic.
- In 1986, The Fabulous Thunderbirds released the album, “Tuff Enuff.” The single “Tuff Enuff,” “Wrap It Up” and “Look At That,” all soared to the top 40. “Tuff Enuff” was also featured in the film "Gung Ho" starring Michael Keaton.
- “Stand Back” and “Powerful Stuff” were featured on the cult classic 1980’s movie, Cocktail and both also did well on the pop charts.
- Vaughn left the band in 1989 but Wilson kept the group going and incorporated keyboards into the guitar-driven sound of the band.
- Wilson moved back to California in 1996, continuing to cultivate the “T-Birds” music. Wilson has a side project called Kim Wilson’s Blues Revue, a traditional blues band. He also owns his own blues label, Blue Collar Music.
- The Fabulous Thunderbirds are widely recognized for their ability to play both blues festivals and rock venues. Their diversified sound is what has kept them a relevant fixture on the music scene for three decades.
